Featured Presenter Information

Richard Morris has been a passionate advocate for low carb diets ever since he reversed his own Type 2 diabetes, co-founding the ‘2 Keto Dudes’ podcast. Richard has now returned to university, studying biochemistry to further advance the science on low carbohydrate diets.

Dr Peter Brukner is a world-renowned sports medicine doctor who believes that dietary guidelines are responsible for the current epidemic of diabetes and obesity. He has authored a popular book on nutrition (A Fat Lot of Good), and is the founder of the SugarByHalf campaign, seeking to improve public health through a reduction in dietary sugar intake.

Jessica Turton is an Accredited Practising Dietitian (APD) with postgraduate qualifications in Nutrition & Dietetics and full membership with the Dietitians Association of Australia. Jessica is currently undertaking her Research Doctorate (Ph.D) at the University of Sydney under the supervision of A/Prof Kieron Rooney and Prof Grant Brinkworth (CSIRO).

Tara Whelan is a pharmacist, Diabetes Educator, and mum who was diagnosed with Type 1 Diabetes as a young woman. She blogs at http://doingdiabetes.com/about/

Nicole Moore has been an accredited dietitian and nutritionist for the past 20 years and has worked in private practice for 20 years. She owns 55 clinics nationally and has a large team of accredited low carb dietitians. Nicole manages, coaches and trains dietitians nationally on LCHF and teaches GPs nationally on low carb. Nicole and her team also consult one on one with patients. Nicole specialises in weight loss, diabetes, gut and low carbohydrate diets and has developed a weight loss, diabetes low carb program.

Dr Laureen Lawler Smith has been working in General Practice in the local area for over thirty years. She is an examiner for the Royal Australian College of General Practitioners. Her special areas of interest are Antenatal Care, Paediatric, Women’s Health, Chronic Disease Management and LCHF.

Mindfulness Meditation and Health Director Liana Taylor founded the Mindfulness Centre believing that Mindfulness and MBCT are gifts to the world and she wanted others to have access to these gifts. Her many roles include: Director, meditation teacher, MBCT teacher trainer, mentor and inspiring keynote speaker.

Dr Paul Mason is a Sydney sports medicine physician with years of experience with the low carb approach to treating patients with metabolic disease and arthritis. He is now a sought after speaker with an international reputation.
Richard Morris is Canberra’s very own star from 2KetoDudes and is now studying biochemistry at ANU.
Jane Williams has reversed pre-diabetes and fatty liver and is ready to tell the world how she got her life back!
Dr Liz Fraser is a Canberra GP with an interest in low-carb nutrition.
Jess Turton is an Accredited Practicing Dietitian in Sydney. Jess has researched low carb approaches for Type 1 diabetes and she understands the struggle with eating disorders.

Presenter Information
Dr John Ombiga is a consultant Gastroenterologist who has been providing a range of Gastroenterology and Hepatology services in Cairns for twelve years. After graduating from medicine at the University of PNG, he gained valuable general medical experience working in remote PNG towns before being invited to work in Sydney by a visiting professor who recognised his enthusiasm and aspirations to progress in the field of internal medicine. He went on to train as a consultant Physician specialising in Gastroenterology. After obtaining a Fellowship of the Royal Australasian College of Physicians specialising in Gastroenterology and Hepatology, John completed a two-year fellowship in Inflammatory Bowel Disease at Fremantle Hospital in Western Australia.
His current role at both the Cairns Hospital and Cairns Private Hospital involves bowel cancer screening, endoscopic management of precancerous gastrointestinal conditions such as Barrett’s mucosa as well as providing a broad range of specialist services for patients with chronic hepatitis, chronic liver disease, inflammatory bowel disease and functional bowel disorders.
John takes an active role in teaching the advanced trainees in Gastroenterology on their quest to become specialists. He has chaired the Cairns Gut Club for over seven years and continues to provide educational sessions for nurses, medical trainees, specialists and general practitioners. He is the recipient of the Paul Harris Fellow award from the Cairns Rotary Club for his role in organising and managing the elective term for PNG medical students at the Cairns Hospital since the inception of the Rotary Club sponsored program in 2008.
Aside from his general enthusiasm with his patients, he has an interest in photography and mountain biking. He also is keen to search for the perfect shot of coffee and have a conversation about the medicinal properties of coffee.

Dr Jake Kushner is a McNair Medical Institute Scholar, Medical Director of McNair Interests, and an Associate Professor at the Baylor College of Medicine. His overarching career goal is to help people with type 1 diabetes and other chronic illnesses to live long, healthy lives. For 6 years he served as Chief of Pediatric Diabetes and Endocrinology at the Baylor College of Medicine and Texas Children’s Hospital. His primary clinical interests center around the care of adolescents and young adults with type 1 diabetes.
