Low Carb Essentials delivers curated collections of the best Low Carb Down Under presentations, focusing on a specific low carb topic each time. Each ‘Essential’ presents key elements of important themes to provide information and a framework for furthering low-carb nutrition discussion.
Intermittent Fasting
The first theme in our essentials collection is ‘Intermittent Fasting’, featuring presentations by international experts Dr Jason Fung, Dr Stephen Phinney and Megan Ramos.
Dr Jason Fung
Dr. Jason Fung is a New York Times-bestselling author of a number of books, including The Obesity Code and The Diabetes Code. He is the co-founder of The Fasting Method, a program to help people lose weight and reverse type 2 diabetes naturally with intermittent fasting. Dr Jason Fung explains how fasting works within the laws of Thermodynamics, using diagrams and simple analogies to demonstrate his points.
Megan Ramos
Megan Ramos is a clinical educator, co-founder of The Fasting Method along with Dr. Jason Fung and expert on therapeutic fasting and low carbohydrate diets, experienced in supporting tens of thousands of patients worldwide. During her talk, Megan addresses some of the common concerns that are brought up in relation to fasting, including discussing issues around electrolytes, refeeding, lean mass, and metabolic rate.
Dr Stephen Phinney
Stephen D. Phinney has over 40 years of academic internal medicine and industry experience, including as director of multi-disciplinary weight management programs. He is a Professor of Medicine Emeritus at the University of California-Davis and an editorial board member of the American Journal of Clinical Nutrition. Dr Phinney is a recognised expert on obesity, low carbohydrate and ketogenic diets, and fasting and the author of four books, including The Art and Science of Low Carbohydrate Living and The Art and Science of Low Carbohydrate Performance.
Dr Phinney discusses resting metabolism, lean body mass, and permanent metabolic damage, as well as considering the effects of extended fasting.
